Freesia 'Cardinal' – one of the most beautiful varieties of Freesia Armstrong, belonging to the Iris family and grown as a decorative bulbous plant. This is a tall (up to 70 cm) plant with thickened stems 20–30 cm long and narrow, long leaves up to 20 cm in length. The bulb is covered with brown scales, while on the tops of the shoots are bell-shaped buds 3–5 cm high, which gather in one-sided groups.
The 'Cardinal' variety is characterized by bright dark-red flowers with a yellow spot. Each inflorescence contains from 9 to 11 flowers about 35 cm long, while the whole spike reaches 9 cm in diameter. The flowers have a rich red shade, the stamens are yellow, the pistil is blue, and the anthers are purple. Such a bright and fragrant bouquet makes the plant popular both for cutting and for planting in living plants.
Freesia 'Cardinal' is perfect for creating floral compositions, wedding bouquets and decorative decoration of flower beds, greenhouses or window sills. For successful growth, the plant requires well-drained sandy soil, a sunny place, regular watering and feeding. After the flowering period has ended, it is recommended to cut off the shoots to stimulate the growth of new bulbs and maintain the decorative appearance of the plant for many years.
