False Flax Zaporozhets

Field Performance and Adaptability

The 'Zaporozhets' camelina hybrid, developed by the Institute of Oilseed Crops of the NAAS, is specifically engineered for the challenging environments of the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones of Ukraine. Its primary advantage lies in its early maturity, which allows the crop to complete its development cycle before the onset of peak summer heat. By avoiding the most intense heat waves, the hybrid maintains stable pollination and grain filling, even in moisture-stressed conditions.

Morphological Traits and Resilience

In the field, 'Zaporozhets' exhibits a straight habit and moderate foliage, which promotes optimal airflow within the canopy and reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Despite its thin stem, the plant's strong branching capability ensures a high yield potential. A critical feature for commercial farming is the low susceptibility of the pods to shattering; this trait allows for flexible harvesting windows, minimizing yield losses even if weather conditions delay field operations. The lack of stem hairs and sparse leaf pubescence further contribute to the plant's overall resilience.

Technological Value

The seeds are characterized by a large 1000-kernel weight and a distinct yellow-brown color. With a low erucic acid content, the oil produced from this camelina is highly versatile, suitable for both food processing and industrial applications, including biodiesel production. 'Zaporozhets' represents a reliable choice for farmers operating in high-risk agricultural zones, offering a balance of early maturity, drought tolerance, and ease of harvest.
