Agronomy and Cultivation of 'Runo' Camelina

Registered in 2024 by the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden, the 'Runo' camelina variety is a specialized crop tailored for the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. Its biological characteristics, including strong branching and a high number of nodes, make it a robust choice for producers looking for both oilseed and green manure options.

Cultivation Practices

• Sowing Strategy: As a late-maturing variety, 'Runo' requires early spring sowing to maximize the growing season. A standard row spacing of 15 cm is recommended to ensure optimal plant density and light penetration, which supports the plant's natural branching habit.
• Soil and Nutrition: While adaptable, the variety thrives in the fertile chernozems of the Forest-Steppe. Adequate phosphorus and potassium levels during the early vegetative stages are essential to support the development of the leaf rosette.
• Field Management: The variety features a pear-shaped fruit with a strong tendency to shatter upon reaching full maturity. Therefore, timely desiccation is a critical management step to prevent yield loss. The absence of stem hairs makes the crop relatively easy to harvest mechanically.

With its large seed mass and low erucic acid content, 'Runo' provides high-quality oil output. Its late-maturing nature and vigorous growth also make it an excellent candidate for soil improvement as a cover crop, effectively suppressing weeds and enhancing soil structure before the subsequent rotation.
