"Chernyy Russkiy" (Black Russian) from Agrofirma Aelita is a variety chosen for its uncompromising fruit size. While most hybrids on the market aim for a standard of 250–300 grams, this eggplant confidently sets the bar at 500–800 grams. It is a true heavyweight capable of impressing any vegetable grower.

Agrotechnical specifics

The variety is mid-season: it takes 50–60 days from seedling emergence to transplanting. The originators — Vladimir Kachaynik and Mikhail Gulkin — aimed to create a variety adapted to specific regional conditions, though it requires adherence to key rules:

• Growing space: Due to the impressive mass of the fruit, the bush requires support and careful pruning. Do not overload the plant, otherwise, the fruits will not reach their full potential.
• Nutrition: The variety is highly responsive to potassium-based fertilizers. Without proper feeding, obtaining a record-breaking 800-gram eggplant will be extremely difficult.
• Light requirements: Like any large-fruited eggplant, it requires maximum sunlight and protection from drafts.

Pros and Cons

Among the undeniable advantages are the deep dark purple color of the skin, which remains even after prolonged storage, and the pear shape, which is convenient for culinary processing. The firm, non-bitter pulp is perfect for caviar and baking.

There is one drawback: high maintenance. This is not a variety that "grows on its own." If you are a novice gardener, be prepared to dedicate more time to staking and pruning the plant.
