The breeding objective focused on achieving a high yield potential through optimized plant architecture and genetic resistance to major diseases.

Biological Development and Adaptation

The hybrid exhibits a distinct generative growth habit, focusing plant energy on fruit set rather than excessive vegetative biomass. This physiological trait is essential for reliable early production, with harvest maturity occurring within 40 to 60 days. Being parthenocarpic, the hybrid ensures fruit development without the need for pollinating insects, making it highly reliable in open-field environments susceptible to variable temperatures.

Fruit Morphology and Marketability

The 'Kulik' hybrid produces fruits with specific, consistent characteristics:

• Length: 10–12 cm, optimized for both fresh market demand and processing requirements.
• Weight: 80–100 g, facilitating uniform packaging and logistics.
• Surface Structure: Large tubercles with a deep green color, which enhances post-harvest shelf life and market appearance.

Phytopathological Resistance

The hybrid's core strength lies in its genetic resilience. Extensive selection using the VIR genetic bank has produced a plant highly resistant to downy mildew (peronosporosis), the primary threat to open-field cucumber yields. Additionally, 'Kulik' offers significant resistance to powdery mildew, allowing for a reduction in chemical fungicide applications and lowering overall production costs while supporting more sustainable farming practices.
