Maize OM 196

Stability and Adaptability in Northern Climates

OM 196 is a corn variety developed by Russian breeders Vladimir Ilyin and Nina Soboleva. Unlike high-input hybrids that require optimal conditions to reach their potential, this variety is tailored for regions with shorter growing seasons and cooler spring temperatures. Its early maturation is a strategic advantage, allowing farmers to harvest before the onset of early autumn frosts.

Grain Characteristics and Practical Use

The flint-type grain is the hallmark of OM 196. This grain structure provides excellent natural resistance to storage pests and field lodging. The yellow, flinty kernels are prized for their high starch content and nutritional profile, making this variety an excellent choice for grain production and livestock feed.

Key Strengths and Suitability

• Performance: OM 196 offers consistent yield reliability without the need for intensive chemical or fertilizer programs. It is an ideal "low-risk" crop.
• Seed Economy: As a variety rather than an F1 hybrid, it offers farmers flexibility in managing their seed supplies, which can significantly reduce production costs for small and medium-sized farms.
• Adaptation: The variety thrives in areas where climate volatility often hampers the performance of more sensitive modern hybrids.

OM 196 is best suited for growers operating in regions where climatic risks are a primary concern. It is a practical tool for those who prioritize economic stability and reliable harvest schedules over the "win-or-lose" nature of high-tech intensive corn farming.
