Leona

Leona corn is an early super-sweet hybrid suitable for fresh market and processing. Ears are large, cylindrical, 18–25 cm long, weighing 220–400 g, with 14–20 rows of kernels. Kernels have a rich sweet flavor, are very juicy, and have a beautiful yellow color. The hybrid features high yield and maintains its market and flavor qualities for a long time after harvest, making it popular for freezing and fresh sale.

Leona corn plants reach 160–180 cm in height and have a cream-colored, toothed kernel type. Ears form well-filled rows of kernels, averaging 14–16 rows with 40 kernels per row, totaling 560–640 kernels per ear. Kernel protein content is about 9.2%, further enhancing the crop's nutritional value. The hybrid exhibits high tolerance to major corn diseases, including smut (Ustilago maydis), Sporospirium holci-sorgi, and Helminthosporium turcicum, contributing to stable yields even under adverse conditions.

For successful Leona corn cultivation, sow in May with a seed rate of 65,000–80,000 seeds per hectare, depending on soil moisture. Harvest in August–September. It is important to grow this super-sweet hybrid separately from other corn varieties to avoid cross-pollination, which may reduce kernel sweetness. Due to its characteristics and disease resistance, Leona corn is an excellent choice for farmers focused on producing high-quality fresh and frozen products.
