Clover Velyur

Lawn Aesthetics: Why «Velour» is the Landscape Architect’s Choice

The «Velour» clover, developed by the Russian Federal Research Center for Fiber Crops, is specifically bred as a decorative variety. Unlike forage cultivars that grow tall and coarse, this clover is designed to form a dense, low-growing «carpet.» Its primary purpose is to provide an aesthetically pleasing cover that requires significantly less maintenance than traditional bluegrass or fescue lawns.

Key Strengths and Features

• High Shoot Density: This variety creates a thick turf that actively suppresses the growth of most weeds, reducing the need for herbicide application.
• Drought Tolerance: Its robust root system allows the plant to remain vibrant during dry spells when standard lawn grasses tend to burn out.
• Natural Nitrogen Fixation: As a legume, «Velour» naturally enriches the soil with nitrogen, making it an excellent choice for areas with depleted topsoil where finicky grass mixes fail to thrive.

Who is this variety for?

«Velour» is optimal for homeowners and land managers who prioritize time and resource efficiency. If your goal is a «low-maintenance lawn» or establishing cover between orchard rows, this clover is a reliable solution. However, it is important to note its limitations: it is not intended for high-traffic sports areas. Clover is less resilient to constant foot traffic compared to grasses, and the leaves tend to hold moisture longer after rainfall.

Keep in mind that «Velour» is a strong attractant for bees. While this is an undeniable advantage for local biodiversity and garden health, it should not be planted immediately adjacent to children’s play areas if there are concerns regarding insect stings.
