Catnip Velvet

A culinary and aesthetic upgrade for your garden

Catnip (Nepeta) variety 'Barkhat' stands out as a sophisticated selection developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production. Unlike wild catnip species that can be overwhelming and somewhat medicinal in scent, 'Barkhat' offers a refined olfactory profile: deep notes of fresh mint underlined by a distinct, pleasant lemon undertone.

Key advantages of the 'Barkhat' variety

• Culinary versatility: Its leaves and flowers are excellent for homemade lemonades, herbal infusions, and marinades. The natural lemon-mint profile eliminates the need for artificial flavorings in tea blends.
• Visual appeal: The plant grows in a compact, tidy form, making it suitable for mixed borders, ornamental gardening, and rockeries rather than just a utility patch.
• Resilience: Developed for the regional climate, this variety shows excellent adaptability to temperature shifts and is relatively low-maintenance, making it a reliable choice for gardeners of all levels.

Considerations: Like many Nepeta varieties, 'Barkhat' is a vigorous grower and can spread if left unmanaged. Additionally, its reputation as a feline favorite is well-deserved; if you have neighborhood cats, you might want to place the plant away from delicate flowers or use it intentionally as a distraction in a corner of your yard.

For those seeking a multi-functional plant, 'Barkhat' is an optimal choice. It serves simultaneously as a culinary herb, a magnet for beneficial pollinators, and an attractive ornamental, saving space while adding complexity to both your garden beds and your kitchen pantry.
