Cabbage Chinook

Technological Edge: A Breeding Breakthrough in Leafy Cabbage

"Chinook" from the Dutch breeding house Bejo is a highly specialized leafy cabbage hybrid, where the core engineering achievement lies in its adaptive immune response. Unlike standard varieties, this hybrid has been specifically refined to combat thrips, which typically cause critical damage to the quality of the leaf apparatus.

Biological Parameters and Morphology

The head shape of the "Chinook" is round-oval, ensuring optimal nutrient distribution and leaf density. The visual profile of the hybrid stands out due to an intense combination of dark green and purple colors. This pigmentation is due to high anthocyanin content, which not only improves the marketability for the fresh market but also increases the tissue resistance to external stressors.

Why This Matters for Agronomists

• Defensive Barrier: Genetic resistance to thrips damage eliminates the need for excessive insecticide treatments, maintaining the integrity of the marketable rosette.
• Market-Oriented Breeding: The round-oval head shape is ideal for standardized packaging, and the unique color contrast makes the produce stand out on retail shelves, which is critical for the fresh market segment.
• Dutch Genetics: Bejo breeding guarantees predictable development and yield stability, even under fluctuating temperature regimes.

Choosing "Chinook" marks a transition from extensive cultivation to high-tech quality control. The hybrid demonstrates exceptional field performance, reducing post-harvest and logistical losses thanks to its dense structure and the healthy condition of the leaf blades.
