Field Performance and Adaptability of 'Elliot D2'

Registered in Ukraine in 2013 by 'Dolyna-Ahro', the 'Elliot D2' blueberry variety is specifically adapted to the climatic conditions of the Polissya and Forest-Steppe zones. The plant exhibits vigorous growth with an upright habit, which is a significant advantage for plantation management and mechanical harvesting.

The variety is highly valued for its winter hardiness, allowing it to withstand harsh winters without significant damage to generative buds. However, 'Elliot D2' is sensitive to soil conditions; it requires strict maintenance of soil acidity (pH 3.5–4.5). Failure to manage the pH levels will result in immediate chlorosis and a decline in overall plant vigor.

Stress Tolerance and Cultivation

• Heat and Drought: The variety shows moderate tolerance to heat. During dry summer spells, consistent drip irrigation is mandatory. Without sufficient moisture, the berries tend to become smaller, and the skin texture becomes excessively firm.
• Disease Resistance: The upright growth habit ensures excellent airflow through the canopy, which naturally reduces the incidence of fungal diseases often associated with dense, humid foliage.
• Phenology: As a very late-maturing variety, 'Elliot D2' features late flowering. This biological trait is a strategic advantage, as it helps the plant avoid late spring frosts that frequently damage early-season varieties in these regions.

Fruiting occurs primarily on the previous year's growth. The berries are firm, dark blue, and possess a relatively low sugar content with high acidity, making them exceptionally well-suited for long-term storage, shipping, and industrial processing. The fruit's structural integrity remains high even after extended periods, ensuring minimal post-harvest losses.
