Barley Prezent

Optimizing Winter Barley Production

The «Prezent» variety, developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (Odesa), represents a robust solution for farmers seeking to stabilize yields in the challenging climatic conditions of Ukraine. As a two-row winter barley, it offers specific advantages in terms of grain uniformity and environmental plasticity, making it a reliable performer across the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones.

Agronomic Insights and Practical Application

• Harvest Flexibility: Being a mid-early variety, «Prezent» facilitates a smoother harvest cycle, allowing farm managers to manage machinery loads efficiently before the main wheat harvest begins.
• Response to Nutrient Management: The variety shows excellent response to early spring nitrogen applications, which is vital for quick biomass recovery after dormancy. It proves highly effective in both fertile soils and under more extensive farming conditions.
• Quality Advantages: The two-row structure naturally favors the production of larger, highly uniform grains. This is a significant advantage for producers focused on quality grain standards, as it reduces losses during cleaning and increases overall marketability.

Field Management Recommendations

When incorporating «Prezent» into a crop rotation, farmers benefit from its strong root system, which enables the crop to access subsoil moisture effectively during periods of spring drought. The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness and resilience to temperature fluctuations. To maximize the yield potential, it is advised to adhere to standard seeding rates for two-row varieties; proper plant density ensures optimal airflow, reducing the humidity around the head and naturally limiting the development of common fungal diseases. This variety is a practical choice for those aiming to balance yield potential with consistent quality and stress resistance.
