Barley Selenia Star

Selena Star: High-Performance Winter Barley

Winter barley variety Selena Star, offered by Pryvatne aktsionerne tovarystvo "Selena", is a result of advanced breeding by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute – National Center of Seed & Cultivar Investigation. Developed by renowned experts V. Yu. Sichniak, O. M. Sheremet, and A. A. Linchevskyi, this six-row barley variety is a staple for agricultural producers looking for reliability and consistent yield quality in the Ukrainian climate.

Agronomic Characteristics

The variety reaches a height of 100–110 cm, offering excellent harvesting efficiency. Its six-row head structure is engineered to produce high-quality, plump grains with a 1000-kernel weight ranging from 40 to 48 grams. This grain density makes it an attractive choice for those focusing on both yield volume and seed quality.

Disease Resistance and Hardiness

Selena Star has been bred with specific attention to plant health, demonstrating strong resistance to common, yield-robbing pathogens:

• Helminthosporiosis;
• Rust (Brown and Stem Rust);
• Powdery mildew.

The winter hardiness is rated at 5 out of 9 points. This score indicates that the variety performs best when planted within the optimal sowing windows, allowing the crop to establish a robust root system before the onset of extreme winter temperatures. Proper adherence to local cultivation techniques is key to unlocking its full genetic potential.

Market Positioning

With its pedigree rooted in one of Ukraine's most prestigious research centers, Selena Star stands out as a balanced option for modern farmers. Its adaptability to diverse soil conditions and focus on disease prevention minimizes the reliance on intensive chemical spraying throughout the growing season. For farmers prioritizing stability and high-quality grain output, Selena Star from Pryvatne aktsionerne tovarystvo "Selena" remains a proven solution for winter crop rotation.
