Veles Spring Barley: A Focus on Reliability

Developed by Oao Npf Belselekt in collaboration with the V.Y. Yuriev Institute of Plant Production, the 'Veles' spring barley variety represents a sophisticated approach to cereal breeding. Led by experts Nikolai Duyun and Veniamin Navolotsky, the project aimed to create a variety capable of maintaining yield stability under diverse agro-climatic conditions.

Phytosanitary Resistance and Growth

The primary advantage of Veles is its robust genetic resistance to common agricultural pathogens. It has shown significant effectiveness against helminthosporiosis, root rots, and stem smut, which helps growers optimize input costs by reducing fungicide applications. The variety features an 80-90 day vegetation period, allowing it to complete its growth cycle before the onset of extreme summer heat, making it highly reliable for short-season environments.

Grain Quality Parameters

The variety is prized for its high-quality grain formation, which ensures both end-user marketability and vigorous seed potential for the following season:

• The 1000-kernel weight ranges between 44 and 50 grams, reflecting good grain filling and density.
• Consistency in kernel size supports easier storage and uniform germination.

By integrating this variety into their portfolio, Oao Npf Belselekt offers farmers a scientifically validated solution that prioritizes both environmental resilience and productive output.
