The Shushenskoie apple variety is the result of breeding at the Scientific Research Institute of Siberian Pomology and was developed in Gorno-Altaisk. It is a medium-sized tree with a broom-like crown shape, beginning to bear fruit in the fourth or fifth year after planting. The variety is distinguished by its high winter hardiness, capable of withstanding temperatures down to -50°C, making it particularly valuable for cultivation in harsh climatic conditions. Additionally, Shushenskoie possesses high resistance to scab, which significantly reduces the need for treatments and increases crop reliability.
The fruits of this variety have an oval, flattened shape and an average weight of about 70–110 grams. The main color of the apples is greenish-white with an intense red blush covering most of the fruit. The flesh is white with pinkish inclusions, of medium density, tender, fine-grained, and juicy. The taste of the apples is acidic-sweet, good, with a weak aroma, rated 4.5 points. The fruits ripen in the summer period, predominantly in the second decade of August, and can be stored for up to 30 days, although if collection is delayed, they quickly lose their juiciness.
The yield of the variety is average, about 13.6 tons per hectare, while fruiting occurs annually and moderately. Apples of the Shushenskoie variety contain an increased amount of vitamin C — up to 25 mg per 100 grams, which makes them not only tasty but also beneficial. Due to the combination of winter hardiness, immunity to scab, and good taste qualities, this variety is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to obtain a stable and quality harvest in Siberian climate conditions.
