Bell pepper is a thermophilic vegetable crop that requires a long growing season. In most temperate regions, it is cultivated primarily using the transplanting method, starting seeds indoors 60–80 days before the last frost date.

For successful germination, seeds require a consistent soil temperature between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius. Under these optimal conditions, seedlings usually emerge within one to two weeks.

Proper seedling care involves picking out the plants once the first pair of true leaves appears to strengthen the root system. Hardening off the seedlings outdoors is a mandatory step before final planting.

Transplanting should only occur when the threat of night frost has completely passed and the soil temperature at a 10 cm depth has reached at least 15–16 degrees Celsius.

The spacing between plants depends on the specific variety's growth habit: dwarf varieties can be spaced 30x40 cm apart, whereas indeterminate or tall varieties require 50x60 cm for adequate air circulation.

Growing requirements

Belonging to the Solanaceae family, the bell pepper originated in tropical regions of the Americas. This evolutionary history dictates its high requirements for heat, sunlight, and humidity throughout its life cycle.

Peppers thrive in well-lit, sunny locations sheltered from harsh winds. The plant is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can trigger stress, leading to flower and fruit drop.

The soil should be fertile, light, and well-drained with a neutral to slightly acidic pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. Heavy soils can be improved by adding organic matter or sand to ensure proper oxygen exchange for the roots.

Consistent soil moisture, maintained at 70–80% of field capacity, is crucial for productivity. Both drought stress and waterlogging must be avoided to ensure a high-quality harvest.

Balanced fertilization is essential throughout the growing season. Nitrogen is key in the early stages, while phosphorus and potassium are vital to support flowering and fruit set.

Yield

The potential yield of bell peppers is highly dependent on the intensity of the agricultural system, variety selection, and environmental control. In open-field conditions, average yields typically range from 20 to 40 tons per hectare.

In greenhouses, utilizing advanced hydroponic or drip irrigation systems, yields can significantly increase to 80–120 tons per hectare or more, depending on the professional management level.

Pruning and shaping the plants by removing the king bud and excess side shoots help focus energy on fruit development, leading to more uniform and larger produce.

Using mulch materials helps conserve soil moisture and regulates temperature in the root zone, which is a major factor in ensuring stable yields during hot or unpredictable weather.

Crop rotation is essential to prevent the buildup of soil-borne pathogens common in Solanaceae plants, ensuring the land remains productive for future agricultural seasons.

Main diseases and pests

Bell peppers are susceptible to several significant diseases, including late blight, alternaria, fusarium wilt, and bacterial spot. Disease management relies on using certified seeds and implementing strict greenhouse hygiene.

Common insect pests include aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, which can rapidly diminish foliage health. Regular field monitoring is necessary to catch infestations at an early stage.

While pests such as the apple blossom weevil, pea weevil, or cherry weevil typically affect other crops, they may migrate to pepper fields if their primary host plants are in close proximity or unavailable.

Seedlings are particularly vulnerable to soil pests like the sandy ground beetle or various weevils during the early establishment phase. Flea beetles can also cause damage to young leaves in dry conditions.

Integrated pest management, combining biological control agents with selective insecticides, is the most effective way to protect crops while minimizing environmental impact.

Harvesting

The harvest timing is divided into technical maturity, when fruits reach their target size, and biological maturity, when fruits develop their final characteristic color (e.g., red, yellow, or orange).

Fruit intended for long-distance transport is usually harvested at the technical maturity stage. Fruits left to reach biological maturity offer superior flavor and higher nutritional content but have a shorter shelf life.

Harvesting should be done carefully by cutting the fruit stems with a sharp knife or shears. Avoid pulling the fruits by hand, as this can easily damage the brittle plant branches.

Frequent harvests, ideally once a week, stimulate the plant to produce new flowers and continue fruit set, maximizing the total yield until the onset of autumn cold.

Post-harvest storage requires cool, humid conditions, typically 8–10 degrees Celsius, to slow down respiration and prevent dehydration of the fresh produce.
