PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS - chemical substances that affect plant growth and development processes. To date, they have found practical application in the following main areas: for pre-harvest leaf removal of plants to mechanize labor-intensive harvesting operations or during transplanting of fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs; to enhance cold resistance, drought tolerance, and increase the yield of primary planting material; to combat lodging in wheat, rye, oats, barley, and other crops under high air and soil moisture; to increase soybean, pea, cottonseed, and some other crops yields; to suppress the growth of young shoots and development of axillary buds to enhance fruiting intensity of some fruit and berry crops; to prevent pre-harvest fruit drop and improve their market quality; to reduce the strength of fruit-stem attachment to facilitate mechanized harvesting; to increase yield and obtain parthenocarpic fruits; to prevent sprouting of tuberous and root crops during long-term storage; to stimulate plant growth and disrupt dormancy in tuberous crops; to accelerate rooting of plants during vegetative propagation by cuttings; to intensify flowering of various ornamental plants and in several other cases.
