Subulinids are known as polyphagous pests, capable of feeding on a wide variety of plant materials. Their ability to thrive in moist potting soil makes them particularly destructive in container-grown operations.
The biology of these molluscs is characterized by hermaphroditism, which allows for rapid population expansion. They typically lay eggs in moist soil or decaying organic matter. The young snails develop quickly, often reaching maturity within a few months, and continuously forage on nearby plant tissues to support their rapid growth cycle.
Damage caused by subulinids involves the consumption of leaves, shoots, and roots of young plants, leading to stunted growth or total plant loss. Their feeding activity leaves distinct irregular holes or skeletonized foliage. Furthermore, their presence introduces the risk of transmitting plant pathogens through their trail of slime and movement across different parts of the crop.
