Spider mites attack a vast array of crops, including soybeans, cotton, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. They are particularly devastating in greenhouse environments where the absence of natural predators and consistent ambient temperatures allow populations to thrive and multiply throughout the year.

The biological development of these mites is highly dependent on temperature and humidity. Under warm, dry conditions, the life cycle from egg to mature adult can be completed in as little as 7 to 10 days. This rapid reproduction rate allows for exponential growth of the population, leading to massive infestations within a very short timeframe.

Damage is characterized by fine stippling on the leaves, which eventually leads to yellowing, bronzing, and premature senescence. The pests are named for their ability to produce fine webbing on the underside of leaves, which protects them from environmental stressors and pesticides while they feed on the plant's cell sap.

Management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM), including the use of selective acaricides to prevent resistance. Cultural practices, such as maintaining optimal irrigation to prevent plant stress and eliminating weed reservoirs, are essential. Additionally, the release of biological control agents like predatory mites (e.g., Phytoseiulus persimilis) is highly effective in controlled environments.
