The pest damage is dual-natured: adults consume the outer tissues of the foliage, while the larvae operate as internal miners, consuming the mesophyll of the leaf.

The life cycle of Odontota consists of complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in plant debris or soil, emerging in the early spring to feed on tender young leaves and lay eggs. After hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf tissue, creating distinctive mines that expand as the larvae grow. Depending on the geographical region and climate, there may be several generations per growing season, increasing the pressure on crops.
