Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves eggs, aquatic nymphs, and short-lived adults. Unlike many other mayfly families, Baetidae nymphs are strong, active swimmers. Their development period in water can last from several months to a year, followed by a rapid transformation into the terrestrial adult stage.
Nature of damage: While not traditional crop pests, Baetidae can become a nuisance in aquaculture, hydroponic systems, and rice cultivation. Their nymphs feed on algae and detritus but may inadvertently consume or graze upon the delicate tissues of submerged crop roots and young shoots.
Economic importance: In high-density populations, these insects contribute to the degradation of young plant tissues, which hinders the development of aquatic or semi-aquatic crops. Furthermore, physical damage caused by nymph feeding creates entry points for various pathogens, potentially reducing crop yield significantly.
Control measures: Management strategies focus on water filtration systems to remove nymphs and physical barriers to prevent adult oviposition. Biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is highly effective against nymphs. Maintaining proper water flow and oxygenation levels can also suppress larval survival rates in sensitive agricultural environments.
