Shield bugs
These pests primarily target woody plants, including various fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums. By piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts, they extract essential sap, which disrupts the normal development of leaves, twigs, and developing fruit in home gardens and commercial orchards.
The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. They typically overwinter as adults in protected environments such as bark crevices or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on host plants, where females deposit eggs in clusters, usually on the underside of leaves.
Damage caused by shield bugs is often economic in nature. Feeding leads to structural deformity of fruits, necrotic spots, and premature fruit drop. The injection of saliva during the feeding process can cause local tissue death, rendering the harvest unmarketable and reducing the overall vigor of the plant.
Effective management strategies include:
- maintaining sanitation by removing debris where pests overwinter;
- implementing physical barriers or manual collection in small-scale plantings;
- applying systemic insecticides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds;
- encouraging natural predators like birds and predatory insects that feed on nymphs and adults.
