Systematically, they are classified within the superfamily Oestroidea. There are thousands of species worldwide, displaying great diversity in size, color, and behavior. While adults are often seen feeding on nectar and pollinating flowers, their primary ecological role is strictly predatory toward other insect species.

The life cycle of Tachinidae involves complex parasitic strategies. Females employ various methods to deposit eggs on or inside their hosts, which primarily include larvae of butterflies, moths, beetles, and sawflies. Once the larva hatches, it consumes the host’s tissues from the inside, eventually killing the pest before the fly pupates.

These flies effectively reduce the damage caused by common agricultural pests such as armyworms, cutworms, and various orchard defoliators. By suppressing the reproduction of these pests, Tachinid flies act as a critical natural control agent in integrated pest management systems, reducing the need for chemical intervention.
