Castniid moths

These moths are notorious pests affecting mainly monocotyledonous plants. Primary targets include palms, bananas, sugar cane, pineapples, and various orchid species. The larvae are notorious borers, causing severe structural damage to the host plant's internal tissues.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, where eggs are laid directly onto the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the stem, trunk, or rhizomes. This internal feeding pattern protects them from most external environmental factors and predators, allowing them to grow undisturbed until pupation occurs inside the plant.

The damage caused by these insects is often lethal. By boring through the center of the plant, they destroy the vascular system and storehouse tissues, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and eventual collapse. Because they remain hidden, visual inspections often fail until the damage is already advanced and irreversible.

Management strategies require vigilance and integrated pest control.

  • Monitoring adult activity using pheromone traps to time chemical interventions accurately.
