Sunburst is a high-yielding Dutch-bred pattypan squash hybrid (Syngenta) that requires precise agrotechnical management to achieve a marketable harvest with its signature bright yellow color. The plant forms a compact, bush-type habit, allowing for efficient space utilization in the field.

Planting Schedule and Spacing

To obtain early produce (45–50 days from transplanting), the seedling method is recommended. Sow seeds 20–25 days before transplanting into the open field, once the threat of frost has passed. The optimal spacing is 80x80 cm or 100x80 cm, ensuring sufficient room for the development of large leaf blades and proper fruit exposure to sunlight.

Soil and Irrigation Requirements

This hybrid prefers light, fertile soils with a neutral pH. It is crucial to avoid areas with water stagnation, as the root system is sensitive to waterlogging. During the active flowering and fruit-setting phases, irrigation should be regular but moderate, preferably applied at the base to prevent moisture from accumulating on flowers and leaves.

Care by Growth Stages

• Vegetative Growth: Early in the season, nitrogen fertilization is necessary to support leaf mass development.
• Flowering: A critical stage requiring soil moisture control. The presence of a yellow ring inside the corolla of both male and female flowers is a varietal trait indicating healthy development.
• Fruiting: Regular harvesting (every 2–3 days) stimulates the formation of new ovaries. Sunburst fruits are prized for their firm flesh, making them ideal for whole-fruit canning and the fresh market.

Due to its bush-type growth and lack of active branching, maintenance for Sunburst is straightforward, focusing on keeping rows clear and providing timely protection against pests common to cucurbits.
