Alexa

Alexa cherry is a late-maturing Hungarian variety developed by breeders of the Budapest Institute of Horticultural and Ornamental Plants. Trees of this variety have a medium growth rate and a compact conical canopy. The variety blooms later, which avoids damage from late frosts and preserves the future crop. It is characterized by high frost resistance and disease resistance, making it suitable for cultivation in various climate zones, including most regions of Ukraine. Alexa cherry fruits are large, weighing from 10 to 12 grams, with a diameter of about 28-30 mm. They have a correct heart-shaped shape, dark red color with white subcutaneous dots, giving them an attractive commercial appearance. The fruit flesh is dense, crunchy, and very juicy, with a high sugar content (about 21° Brix) and slight acidity, ensuring a high-quality sweet-and-sour taste. Fruits have good transportability and can be stored for up to two weeks, making the variety promising for market cultivation and sales. Alexa variety trees are powerful and compact, suitable for intensive orchards and can be planted at high density. The variety is self-fertile, does not require pollinators, but is well-pollinated by cherries flowering in the same period. Yield is high and stable, fruits ripen in the first week to mid-July. Seedlings are grafted on the vigorous Colt rootstock, which promotes early and abundant fruiting. Due to its characteristics, the Alexa variety is an excellent choice for cultivation in both industrial orchards and private holdings.
