Tulip Yuri Dolgorukiy

The Mechanics of Lily-Flowered Morphology

The 'Yuriy Dolgorukiy' cultivar is a definitive example of lily-flowered tulips, characterized by a specific perianth architecture. The elongated, pointed tepals that recurve slightly at the edges provide more than just aesthetic appeal; they create a structural rigidity that helps the bud withstand heavy rainfall, preventing internal water accumulation. This design ensures the flower maintains its integrity throughout the late blooming period.

Growth Cycle and Environmental Adaptation

Categorized as a late-blooming variety, this tulip is physiologically optimized to avoid the volatile frost risks of early spring. The tall scape (stem) requires a site with moderate wind protection to prevent lodging. The deep red pigment exhibits high photochemical stability, resisting degradation under direct sunlight, which maintains the saturation of the petals until the senescence of the flower begins.

Cultivation Technicals

• Planting Depth: Standardized at 10-15 cm, ensuring that the bulb remains insulated from minor temperature fluctuations while establishing a robust root system.
• Soil Hydraulics: Being sensitive to basal plate rot, this variety thrives in well-drained substrates where gravitational water removal is efficient.
• Nutrient Management: To sustain the high-reaching stem structure, supplemental potassium and phosphorus are required during the early bud formation phase to bolster cellulose deposition in the peduncle.
