Tulip Kingsblood

The Steel Character of a Late-Season Tulip

The Kingsblood tulip holds a unique position in the simple late-season segment. Unlike many hybrids that require greenhouse conditions or a perfect microclimate, this variety demonstrates remarkable resistance to pathogens for its class. Breeders have achieved high resistance to Fusarium wilt, Cladosporium, and powdery mildew, making it a reliable choice for open-field cultivation.

Vegetative Characteristics

The key differentiator of Kingsblood is its sturdy stature. This tall tulip features a robust stem that requires no additional support, even during strong winds. Its dense, deep-red petals possess a unique texture that resists sun fading. This color stability is exactly what sets it apart from other red varieties, which often lose their intensity toward the end of the flowering period.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• Immunity: Comprehensive resistance to fungal diseases and tomato mosaic virus minimizes the need for heavy fungicide applications.
• Aesthetics: The classic goblet-shaped flower in a rich scarlet hue is ideal for landscape design and cut flower production.
• Requirements: Like all late-season tulips, it requires proper drainage. If moisture stagnates in the spring, the root system may struggle despite its genetic resistance to common diseases.

This variety is optimal for professional growers who value predictability. In the face of unpredictable spring weather, Kingsblood performs more consistently than many exotic hybrids, offering a perfect blend of classical beauty and high vitality.
