Sunflower Planet

Working with the "Planeta" sunflower hybrid

When choosing seeds for medium-to-late maturity groups, the "Planeta" hybrid from the Institute of Oilseed Crops of the NAAS consistently ranks among the favorites for farmers focused on predictable results. This is a classic simple hybrid that requires a thoughtful approach to agricultural practices from the operator, but in return, it demonstrates impressive resilience.

Field performance and operation

In practice, plant height ranges from 150 to 200 cm, which imposes specific requirements on header settings. During harvesting, it is crucial to consider the basket formation: it is large and flattened, so the combine speed in "Planeta" fields must be balanced to avoid excessive harvest losses during threshing.

• Vegetation period: 140–150 days. As this hybrid belongs to the medium-late group, it must be sown strictly within optimal timeframes to avoid missing the favorable moisture window for grain filling.
• Sowing quality: The seeds have a distinctive black color. They are characterized by good germination energy, which is essential for uniform emergence—this significantly simplifies subsequent care and weed control.
• Harvesting: Due to the large basket and the general plant architecture, this hybrid is well-suited for mechanized harvesting. The stem is sufficiently strong, minimizing lodging risks during strong winds at the end of the season.

For a farmer, "Planeta" is a reliable workhorse. It does not require specific growth regulators if the seeding rate is maintained, and when crop rotation is followed, it shows excellent yield in terms of oil content. The key is to correctly calibrate the combine settings to accommodate the basket size, and the crop will reward you with a clean hopper and minimal grain loss.
