Physalis is a decorative sunflower bred through selection to create a unique ornamental phenotype. It is characterized by its low growth and compact cylindrical habitus, making the plant attractive for decorative greening. A feature of this variety is the large number of flower heads and apical branching, where the central head is located on the same level as the side inflorescences. The long vegetation period allows the plant to maintain its decorative qualities for a long time.
Physalis belongs to the group of decorative sunflowers created based on the genetic collection of VNIIMK, where it was obtained through crossing and individual selection by morphotype. These plants differ in resilience and compactness, making them convenient for growing in various conditions. Thanks to their features, physalis can be used to decorate gardens and homesteads, as well as in landscape design.
Although physalis is not phacelia, it is worth noting that phacelia is a herbaceous plant known as an excellent nectar-producing and cover crop. Phacelia develops quickly, forming a dense leaf-stem mass that effectively suppresses weeds. The honey from phacelia is high quality, light greenish or white in color, and bees collect it until late autumn. However, these characteristics relate to a different plant and are not related to the decorative sunflower physalis.
