Sunflower Irma

Stability and Protection: Working with «Irma»

When dealing with the Woodstock «Irma» sunflower hybrid, the first thing you notice in the field is its manageable height. At 130–140 cm, the plants do not cause issues during combine harvesting: the stalk is sturdy, resistant to lodging, and the header works smoothly without excessive header loss. For an operator, this means a stress-free season without any «surprises» caused by tangled crops.

Field Characteristics and Harvesting

The seeds have a characteristic narrow-ovate shape and a rich black color. They thresh cleanly during harvesting. The medium-sized, slightly convex head ensures uniform ripening, which is critical when setting up the combine drum. An oil content of 45–50% makes this hybrid an economically sound choice for those supplying to processing plants where oil premiums are paid.

Phytosanitary Aspect

The main advantage for an agronomist is the marked resistance to Sclerotinia. During a wet summer, when other hybrids start to suffer from fungal diseases, «Irma» holds up consistently. This significantly reduces spending on fungicide treatments and eliminates the need for emergency harvesting of infected areas.

Operational Summary

• Cost Optimization: Thanks to high disease resistance, the spray load is reduced.
• Technical Compatibility: The medium plant height allows the use of standard machinery settings without modifications.
• Result: Stable oil accumulation, which directly impacts the final revenue per hectare.

Hungarian breeding from Woodstock and the MATE institutes proves its worth in the field: it is a predictable and «operator-friendly» hybrid that is forgiving of minor agronomic slips and provides high-quality grain.
