Genetic Protection and Sugar Yield: The Tech Profile of POLL S 1660

The French breeding school of Florimond-Desprez Veuve et Fils is renowned for its meticulous approach to the phytosanitary safety of its hybrids. POLL S 1660 is a high-tech product aimed at farms operating in high-pressure infection environments. The foundation of this hybrid is its comprehensive genetic resistance, embedded at the level of molecular selection.

Phytopathological Barrier

The critical node of POLL S 1660 resistance is its defense against rhizomania—the necrotic yellow vein virus, which can reduce yields by 50% or more under intensive farming conditions. Florimond-Desprez breeders have integrated specific markers that block viral spread within the root crop. An additional layer of protection is the pronounced tolerance to Cercospora leaf spot. In the field, this ensures the preservation of the canopy until late autumn, which is vital for sustained sucrose synthesis.

Sugar Accumulation Efficiency

Production performance data for this hybrid shows a stable sugar content in the 18-19% range. From a plant physiology perspective, this is the result of optimized nitrogen metabolism and a high photosynthetic activity coefficient. Harvest timing with POLL S 1660 becomes more flexible, as the hybrid maintains its sugar levels despite temperature fluctuations, thereby mitigating risks for processing plants receiving the raw material.

Practical Takeaways for the Agronomist

• Reduction in fungicide application costs due to natural resistance to Cercospora.
• Consistent end-product output: 18-19% sugar content ensures high profitability even with moderate yield volumes.
• Adaptability to diverse soil and climatic conditions due to breeding strategies tailored to volatile environmental factors.
