SCHOOL VALS

School Vals is an annual or biennial plant of the Solanaceae family, belonging to the genus Salpiglossis. The plant height usually ranges from 45 to 60 cm, and the stems remain sparsely branched and fragile, covered with soft fuzz.


The flowers of School Vals are funnel-shaped, large, and fragrant. They display a wide spectrum of shades – from azure and violet to red, pink, orange, golden, and dark burgundy with contrasting patterns. Flowering lasts from June to the first frosts, however, during cold and rainy periods, the intensity of flowering may decrease.


For successful cultivation, the plant prefers a sunny, wind-protected location. The soil should be fertile, well-draining, and enriched with manure. Watering is moderate, preferably with warm water; excessive moisture or drought negatively affects growth and flowering. If necessary, you can fertilize with mineral complexes and remove faded flowers to stimulate further development.


Varieties of School Vals are divided into dwarf (e.g., «Bolero», «Carnival», «Casino», «Festival», «Flamenco») and tall (Grandiflora up to 80 cm). Growing from seeds usually begins in late April–early May, or by seedling method in containers with peat-sand substrate. Germination takes from 14 to 20 days. After pricking out, plants are staked and planted about 20 cm apart.


School Vals fits perfectly into flower beds, garden beds, and compositions with other decorative plants, such as salvias, petunias, cinerarias, and marigolds. It also looks great next to coniferous plants, creating a bright contrast of colors and textures.
