Strawberry Tarda

Engineering High Yields: The Genetics of Tarda

The Tarda variety, developed by the Dutch nursery Vissers Aardbeiplanten B.V., is the result of precision breeding aimed at stabilizing performance in variable climates. As a June-bearing (non-everbearing) variety with a mid-late ripening cycle, Tarda demonstrates exceptional adaptability in both open field conditions and protected greenhouse environments.

Technical Specifications and Morphology

• Weight and Geometry: Berries weighing 30–40 grams feature a consistent conical shape, simplifying the logistics of automated harvesting and packaging. The vibrant red color is maintained even after prolonged shelf life.
• Productivity: When adhering to optimal agrotechnological practices, yields range from 0.8 to 1.2 kg per plant, marking it as a top-tier performer for the fresh market segment.
• Hardiness: Superior cold resistance (down to -25°C) is backed by a robust root system architecture and genetically embedded resistance to common berry pathogens.

The fundamental advantage of Tarda lies in the balance between fruit firmness and organoleptic quality. For the grower, this translates into lower wastage rates during transport, while consumers receive a product with premium aroma and visual appeal. High disease resistance allows for a reduction in chemical intervention, which is essential for sustainable, high-quality production in the current agricultural landscape.
