Demira

The hard winter wheat variety Demira was developed by the Institute of Plant Protection named after V. Ya. Yuryev of NAAN and registered in 2019. It is recommended for cultivation in the forest-steppe zone using intensive technology. This medium-maturing variety belongs to the leucurum type, with a vegetation period of about 101 days and plant height up to 90 cm. The ear easily threshes, and the 1000-seed mass ranges from 48.0 to 50.6 g. The sowing rate is 5 million germinating seeds per hectare; seeds must be treated with fungicide and insecticide prior to sowing to protect against diseases and pests.

Demira exhibits high resistance to lodging, shattering, drought, powdery mildew, brown rust, Fusarium ear rot, root rot, and the cereal bug. It surpasses standard benchmarks in resistance to hard smut and septoria. Potential yield reaches 7.1 t/ha, while average yield over test years is 4.5 t/ha. The grain contains 31–34% gluten and 13.5–15.5% protein, ensuring good pasta qualities. The variety belongs to the dual-use group, making it suitable for both pasta production and bread-making.
