Onion Volzhanin

A Classic of Regional Breeding

The Volzhanin variety is the result of long-term work by the Volgograd Experimental Station of the Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources. Developed specifically for challenging agricultural conditions, this onion has become a standard of reliability for producers. Its market debut signaled a shift toward varieties that blend proven genetics with adaptability to industrial farming practices.

Agronomic Overview

Volzhanin is a late-maturing, salad-type onion. With a growing season of 130–140 days, it is a preferred choice for farms focused on high-yield production with excellent shelf life. The variety is fully adapted to mechanized harvesting, a critical factor for large-scale agricultural enterprises aiming to minimize labor costs.

Commercial Characteristics

• Bulb: Round and firm, with an individual mass ranging from 90 to 130 grams.
• Appearance: Light brown dry outer scales protecting crisp, white flesh.
• Flavor Profile: Exhibits classic salad onion characteristics, maintaining a perfect balance of sharpness and succulence.

Despite the abundance of modern foreign hybrids, Volzhanin maintains its market position due to its stability and predictability. It is a time-tested workhorse that delivers excellent results when standard agronomic practices are followed. Choosing this variety means relying on genetics that have passed through the rigorous breeding standards of the Volgograd Station.
