Onion Balada

Field Performance of the Balada Onion

Working with the Balada white onion variety (originated by Nosivska SDS) is all about consistency. Unlike temperamental hybrids that require micro-managed irrigation schedules, this variety is robust. Its standout trait is a strong natural resistance to downy mildew (peronosporosis), which allows for fewer mid-season crop health interventions compared to sensitive varieties.

Plant Protection and Maintenance

Operational costs related to fungicides are notably lower thanks to the crop's genetic resilience against rots and powdery mildew. While scouting for onion flies is still a standard operating procedure, the plant's natural strength makes it easier to keep the field in check. With an appropriate fertilization schedule, the bulbs develop high density and a clean, uniform white appearance, which is non-negotiable for the premium salad market.

Harvesting and Post-Harvest Value

Since this is a salad-type onion, manual harvesting is the standard. This keeps the rejection rate low during the sorting process. The scales adhere firmly to the bulb, which makes preparation for market easier and more efficient, reducing labor time spent on cleaning the product before it reaches the end user.

In short: Balada is a reliable asset for growers focusing on the high-quality salad segment, ensuring less waste during the critical harvest period.
