Onion AK-1

Working with AK-1 Hybrid

Working with genetics from Bayram Tohum, it is clear that their focus is on early harvest performance. AK-1 is a typical short-day onion, ideally suited for southern regions where rapid development is key to profitability. In the field, the crop is consistent, showing uniform germination and reliable response to standard agronomic practices.

Bulb Characteristics and Yield Potential

This variety is specifically designed for the salad onion market. Its round shape and mild flavor profile make it a preferred choice for fresh produce suppliers. Based on field observations, the key specs are:

• Appearance: Light brown outer skin with a clean, white, succulent flesh.
• Yield: Capable of producing up to 50 tons per hectare under optimal conditions.
• Dry Matter: Up to 10%, ensuring the soft texture and mild taste expected from a premium salad onion.

Storage and Logistics

It is critical to manage expectations regarding shelf life: AK-1 is not intended for long-term winter storage. It has a shelf life of 2 to 3 months. It is the perfect tool for producers who need to clear their inventory quickly after harvest to capitalize on early-season market gaps. By planning the supply chain effectively, farmers can maximize the value of this variety before mid-season bulk onions flood the market.
