Description BOGAT
Nigella (black cumin) – an annual herbaceous plant of the Ranunculaceae family, native to Western Asia. The plant usually does not exceed 60 cm in height, and flowers can be white, yellow, blue, or purple; varieties with blue coloration are most popular. The plant is characterized by high resistance to cold and frost, preferring light, loose soils, tolerates wind and moderate watering well. For cultivation, seeds are sown in spring (April-May) or in autumn; after sowing, the plot is covered until warmth arrives, and then regularly loosened and fertilized.

Nigella seeds have a pronounced aroma reminiscent of oregano, with a bitter and peppery taste. They are widely used as a spice in cooking: frying, salads, starters, pickling, and seasonings for dishes. In medicine, seeds are used in the form of infusions, tinctures, and mixtures with honey or olive oil; they possess antihelminthic, diuretic, and laxative properties and are used in homeopathy to relieve spasms.

The medicinal properties of black cumin are confirmed by modern research. Seeds and their oil contain essential components (timoquinone), vitamins, zinc, and calcium, which contribute to improved metabolism, reduced glucose levels, support of the immune system, and have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anticancer effects. They are used in diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, hypertension, gastrointestinal infections, and even as prevention of certain viral diseases. During pregnancy and in people with transplanted organs, caution should be exercised due to possible enhanced immune response.

Nigella is also valued as an ornamental plant: its bright flowers and compact growth make it suitable for landscape design, compositions, and dried bouquets. Seed pods are often used in floristics due to their resistance to drying. For external use, seeds are usually roasted, while the internal consumable form is unroasted.
