Hop Strong

Strategic high-alpha choice for growers

The «Sylnyi» (Strong) variety, bred by the Ukrainian Institute of Hop Growing, is engineered for efficiency. With an alpha-acid content of 12–16%, it is positioned as a primary ingredient for breweries focusing on hop-forward beer styles where both bitterness and complexity are paramount.

Agricultural management

To maximize the potential of «Sylnyi», growers must focus on precision farming practices:

• Nutrient management: Controlled nitrogen levels are essential to prevent lush vegetative growth at the expense of cone yield and alpha-acid accumulation.
• Harvest timing: The window for optimal harvesting is narrow. Early harvesting may limit oil profile, while late harvesting risks cone degradation and quality loss.
• Pest pressure: Due to its cone density, the variety requires proactive scouting for spider mites and aphids to ensure the final product meets brewing grade standards.

Brewing applications

«Sylnyi» is a versatile tool for IPA and ale production. Its aromatic profile is defined by a distinct blend of pine, fruit, and herbal undertones. In the brew house, it serves a dual purpose: it provides a clean, firm bitterness that supports the malt backbone of an IPA, while its aromatic compounds contribute to a refreshing finish. For commercial brewers, this variety offers a sustainable local alternative to imported high-alpha hops, providing consistent performance across various brewing cycles while helping to keep production costs competitive.
