Cultivation and Potential of the "Strukturator" Hybrid

"Strukturator" is a complex daikon hybrid of French selection (originator SAATBAU LINZ eGen), registered in Ukraine in 2019. This variety is adapted for cultivation across all agro-climatic zones, from the Steppe to Polissya. Due to its early maturity and high resistance to pithiness (hollow core), this hybrid has become a reliable tool for professional vegetable growers.

Growing Requirements

To realize the potential of "Strukturator," soil preparation is critical. Since the root crop has an "icicle" shape and significant length, it requires deep tillage (at least 30–40 cm). Heavy, compacted soils lead to deformation, so light sandy loam or loamy soils with a neutral pH are preferred.

• Planting Scheme: Optimal density is achieved with row spacing of 45–60 cm and a distance of 15–20 cm between plants in the row.
• Timing: The early maturity of the hybrid allows for two-season cultivation. Spring sowing is performed when the soil warms up to +8...+10°C, while autumn sowing is done in the second half of summer to avoid long daylight hours that trigger bolting.
• Irrigation: Daikon is extremely sensitive to water management. Uneven irrigation is the primary cause of cracking and loss of marketability. During the active root growth phase, soil moisture must be maintained at 70–80% of field capacity.

Care by Growth Stages

At the seedling emergence stage, it is crucial to provide protection against flea beetles, as damage to cotyledons at early stages significantly reduces growth energy. In the 3–4 true leaf phase, thinning and the first inter-row cultivation are performed to aerate the root system. "Strukturator" is characterized by a semi-erect leaf position, which facilitates maintenance and mechanized processing. The absence of anthocyanin coloration in the hypocotyl and petioles indicates the purity of the genetic material, simplifying visual monitoring of crop health.
