Currant Elegia

Cultivation Practice of "Elegia"

The "Elegia" blackcurrant is a reliable choice for those prioritizing late-season harvest and predictability. Developed by the L.P. Simirenko Institute of Pomology, this cultivar has proven itself as a robust tool for modern orchards. With its medium-spreading habit, it requires careful spacing between rows to ensure efficient machinery operation and easy access for hand-picking during the harvest phase.

Maintenance and Operational Efficiency

A key benefit for the grower is the variety's strong resistance to powdery mildew. This translates into lower pesticide costs and fewer field passes, simplifying the annual maintenance program. Given its late ripening cycle (55–65 days from bud break), the harvest period allows for better labor management, preventing overlap with early-season varieties.

• Berry Specs: Consistent size of 2.6–3.5 cm, ideal for mechanized sorting lines with minimal waste.
• Plant Architecture: The compact 1-meter height makes manual harvesting efficient, as berries are easily accessible throughout the canopy.
• Handling: The skin is firm, ensuring excellent shelf life and transport stability for fresh market distribution.

While the "Elegia" is undemanding regarding soil care, it benefits significantly from adequate irrigation during the berry swelling phase to maintain its signature size. This is a low-maintenance, reliable performer that maintains fruit quality even if growing conditions are not perfect.
