The «Modul» variety, developed by the V.I. Edelstein Vegetable Research Center (originator A.V. Borisov), is a bee-pollinated cucumber specifically bred for professional use in glass greenhouses. In an era dominated by parthenocarpic hybrids, «Modul» retains its niche due to its specific plant architecture and flavor profile typical of traditional cucumbers.

Agrotechnical features and disease resistance

The defining characteristic of «Modul» is its vegetative growth habit, which requires precise climate control and proper vine management. The variety reaches the harvest stage in 45–50 days, allowing for efficient use of greenhouse space throughout the season.

A significant advantage of this variety is its robust disease resistance profile. The breeding program focused on minimizing risks from the most aggressive greenhouse pathogens:

• Mycosphaerella spot and Ascochyta blight — the variety shows high resistance to these critical threats.
• Powdery mildew and brown spot — «Modul» effectively suppresses these diseases, reducing the need for chemical fungicide applications.
• Olive spot (Cladosporium) — the variety possesses strong genetic resistance to this pathogen.

Who is this variety for?

«Modul» is an excellent choice for farms specializing in spring and summer cultivation in glass-covered structures. Its smooth-skinned, 10–12 cm long fruits have a classic market appeal. However, growers should note that because it is a bee-pollinated variety, the presence of pollinators or manual pollination is essential for fruit set, making it less suitable for highly automated indoor facilities.

The main trade-off is the dependence on pollinators, while its key strength is the predictability of yield and the high level of adaptation to the infectious pressure typical of enclosed greenhouse environments.
