Decemberist, also known as Schlumbergera or Zygocactus, is a perennial indoor plant belonging to the cactus family, although by origin and biology it is closer to epiphytes than to typical cacti. Native to humid tropical forests of South America, where it grows on tree trunks. Visually, the plant resembles a low shrub with drooping branches, reaching up to 50 cm in height. Its stems consist of flat, broad, and dense segmented segments with serrated edges, which may become woody at the base over time. The flowers of the Decemberist are tubular, multi-layered, and come in various colors — from white and pink to orange, purple, and red, depending on the variety. The stamens of the flowers are long and gracefully drooping, giving the plant a special decorative charm.
One of the unique features of the Decemberist is its ability to bloom during the winter period, usually starting in December and continuing to flower for 2-3 months. This makes it especially popular as an indoor plant, since during cold and dark winter months, when most plants are dormant, the Decemberist delights with bright and colorful blooms. Flowering begins with the appearance of numerous buds at the tips of stems in late autumn, creating a festive decoration in the home.
Despite its decorative appeal, the Decemberist requires careful care, as its root system is relatively weak. For successful cultivation, it is necessary to provide the plant with optimal conditions — moderate watering, proper lighting, and protection from overwatering. Thanks to its hardiness and winter blooming, the Decemberist has become a favorite among many horticulturists and acquired folk names such as 'Decemberist' and 'Christmas cactus,' symbolizing beauty and life in cold weather.
