Agronomic nuances and crop protection

With an FAO rating of 90–1240, this hybrid requires careful harvest planning. The simple hybrid structure ensures uniform growth across the field, which simplifies combine settings significantly. We faced the need for strict pathogen control, specifically regarding common smut (stalk smut). The hybrid demands timely fungicide application, as infection can cause the popping quality to drop to near zero. Crop rotation is not just a suggestion here; it is a critical requirement for maintaining profitability.

Maintenance and post-harvest processing

In terms of harvesting, the hybrid performs predictably. The grain threshes well, but it is vital to monitor drum speed settings to avoid damaging the pericarp — for popcorn, this is fatal. We dry it carefully at reduced temperatures, otherwise, the starch structure within the endosperm loses its expansion properties. While the costs per hectare are standard, the investment in Monsanto seed pays off because, with proper management, you are dealing with a premium market commodity, not just average livestock feed.
