VELIKOLUKSKIY cumin – a variety with white-yellowish, thin and spindle-shaped seeds that have fleshy pulp. Seeds ripen at medium maturity (80–85 days after germination) and are distinguished by good taste qualities. The plant reaches a height of 40–45 cm, leaves are dark-green, elongated-oval, with a semi-upright rosette, and flowers are white. Green mass yield is about 160 g/sqm.
The variety is intended for culinary use: fresh leaves and young shoots are added to salads, soups and other dishes, while seeds and ground cumin are used as a flavoring for baked goods. Cumin is also suitable for pickling cabbage and cucumbers thanks to its pleasant taste.
VELIKOLUKSKIY cumin is resistant to diseases and frost-hardy, which ensures good preservation of seeds and ground product even in airtight containers. The plant is grown in open ground with sowing in April (scheme 20×30 cm, depth 1–1.5 cm) and harvesting in July. Timely watering, fertilizing and soil loosening are required for optimal growth.
