The spring barley 'MEDICUM 21' is a breeding product designed for stable grain production in temperate climates. Developed by originators Dmitry Tishkov and Rinat Abdrashitov, the selection focuses on balancing vegetative speed with grain filling.

Crop Architecture and Morphology

A plant height of 60–70 cm is ideal for spring crops: this range minimizes lodging risks under intensive mineral nutrition while maintaining a sufficient leaf surface area for effective photosynthesis. The short vegetative period of 80–90 days allows for efficient utilization of early spring moisture, which is critical in regions prone to June and July droughts.

Phytopathological Protection

A key advantage of this variety is its genetically encoded resistance to smut pathogens. Resistance to covered smut (stone smut) and the suppression of onion stem smut development (within the agrocenosis context) significantly reduce the need for seed fungicide treatments, thereby lowering the production cost per ton of yield.

Grain Mass and Productivity

A 1000-kernel weight ranging from 48–50 grams indicates high grain plumpness. This is a significant indicator for spring varieties, ensuring vigorous seedling emergence and high germination energy. The large grain of 'MEDICUM 21' demonstrates excellent threshing performance, reducing harvest losses and improving the overall grade of the grain yield.
