Astilbe Fanal – a compact perennial reaching heights of 45–80 cm, attracting attention with bright raspberry-red inflorescences measuring 20–25 cm in length and 6–8 cm in width. The plant features a powerful woody rhizome, reddish stems and petioles, and odd-pinnate leaves with serrated edges: during the spring period, they are brownish or reddish before transitioning to a dark green hue. The foliage is dense and thick, giving the bush a decorative appearance even outside the flowering period.
Fanal prefers moist, fertile soil with a slight acidity (pH 5.5–7). The plant requires regular watering – the soil should not dry out, especially during summer months. The most favorable locations are partial shade or dappled shade, where the plant is protected from scorching sun; however, with sufficient moisture, it can also grow in full sun without leaf burns. In drier soils, Fanal can be placed in a shady spot, though frequent watering will then be required.
Flowering begins at the end of June and continues until July or early August, with the full flowering period lasting 20–25 days. The flowers retain their rich red color for several weeks, making the bush attractive both in the garden and for cut flowers. After flowering, it is recommended to remove spent inflorescences to stimulate further growth.
Caring for Fanal is simple: when planting, carefully transfer the root ball from the container into a hole, fill the voids with substrate up to the level of the upper part of the rhizome, and lightly tamp it down. In the first year after planting, the plant should be watered abundantly and covered with fallen leaves for winter protection. After 3–4 years, the rhizomes may grow above the surface, so fertile soil should be added.
Astilbe Fanal is an ideal choice for moist garden areas, hedges, and borders along paths. Thanks to its resistance to pests and diseases, as well as its decorative foliage and flowering parts, it will become a bright accent in any landscape.
