Aster Smile

Stability in Disease-Prone Soil

The 'Ulybka' (Smile) aster stands out in the market primarily for its genetic resistance to Fusarium, a common blight that plagues many annual aster varieties. Developed by the Poisk agro-firm in collaboration with Russian federal research centers, this cultivar is a go-to for gardeners dealing with 'tired' soil where other varieties fail to thrive.

Structural Elegance

Unlike standard garden asters, 'Ulybka' offers a hybrid aesthetic, blending the lushness of peony-flowered types with the dense, geometric structure of pompon varieties. The blossoms reach an impressive 10–15 cm in diameter. This unique form ensures the flowers remain intact and visually appealing even after heavy rain, avoiding the 'ragged' look common in inferior varieties.

Key Characteristics for Growers

• Stature: Reaches 50–80 cm, perfect for mid-ground garden borders.
• Versatility: Equally effective as a bedding plant or a container specimen.
• Climate: Strictly an annual; requires frost-free conditions for development.

The primary advantage of 'Ulybka' is the balance between size and health—you get massive, vibrant pink blooms without the constant need for aggressive fungicide treatments. Its main trade-off is the weight of the flower heads; in exposed, windy areas, the sturdy stems may still require support. For the professional grower, this is a low-maintenance, high-yield variety that provides consistent results, making it highly suitable for both cut flower production and large-scale urban landscaping projects.
