Aster Maria

Technical Profile and Morphology

The 'Maria' aster variety represents a focus on high-marketability cut flowers. Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing, this cultivar achieves an optimal balance between vegetative biomass and reproductive growth. With a stem height ranging from 50 to 80 cm, the plant develops robust, upright flower stalks. This architecture is critical for commercial production, as it prevents lodging and stem deformation under the weight of large flower heads.

Biometric Data and Floral Potential

• Flower diameter: 10–15 cm. This classification places the variety in the large-flowered segment.
• Growth cycle: Annual, non-wintering.
• Coloration: Consistent pink pigment, maintaining saturation throughout the bloom cycle.

The technical advantage of 'Maria' lies in its versatility. Due to the stem length and the density of the petals, the variety yields excellent results in cut flower production, maintaining high turgor for an extended period. In landscape design, the variety is valued for its uniform development, allowing for the creation of dense, monochromatic flower beds with a predictable canopy height.

Cultivation Insights

As an annual crop, this variety requires an annual seed cycle. The genetic potential established by the originators ensures rapid development and the formation of large, showy blooms during the first year of growth. The lack of winter hardiness is compensated for by the high vegetative growth rate, making it a reliable solution for producers seeking consistent results in short-cycle agricultural planning.
